Ankle and Foot

Do you repetitively sprain your ankle? Does the bottom of your foot hurt? Do your calves get super tight or crampy during or after exercise?

Ankle and Foot

These questions, and more, are great for identifying the cause of your ankle or foot problem.

Once you have sprained ligaments in your ankle they are much more vulnerable to reinjury. Retraining single leg balance will help strengthen other structures around your ankle and foot, to compensate for your damaged ligament(s) long term. Taping or bracing can be useful for high intensity, multi-directional sports but regaining strength and stability during everyday living is essential.

Your foot is made of many small bones, a lot of tendons and ligaments, and a very strong group of muscles underneath called your plantafascia. Inflammation of any tendon, ligament or fascia can cause a change in the shape of your foot which can result in numbness, pins and needles, pain or blisters. Keeping good muscle mobility in your lower leg with gentle stretching and regular massage will help to offload these structures in your foot.

Also getting your footwear assessed to make sure it is adequately supporting your foot type is beneficial. Sometimes our shoes can be to supportive or not supportive enough, causing more problems or delaying healing. It might be time to consider buying new ones if yours are getting old or a second pair for your most used pair of shoes.
